The Brown residence was a 2400 square foot home plus guest house on Broad Beach road in Malibu California. The home was purchased to undergo a major renovation as to become a weekend gathering place for the family. The existing two story home was a 1970's, slab on grade contemporary home. During preliminary inspection, we set up a laser and determined that the quality of work done on part of the home was less than desirable. The decision was made to completely demolish part of the home including removing the foundation. This work had to be done in stealth as to not draw attention from the Coastal Commission. The two story section of home to be demolished was first jacked up to remove the foundation. During this process, we discovered the underlying problem, a previous owner had built a two story addition onto the home and poured the exterior foundation wall directly over the existing septic tank in the courtyard. The septic tank was removed and the existing structure was torn down and rebuilt without notice. This was a design build project with a large group of designers and Architects from different firms. In preconstruction, we were able to draw all steel columns and beams in relationship to framing and concrete with elevations and dimensions above and below grade for architectural and structural approval. We were in the demolition phase of the project when the decision was made to transform the home into a Craftsman. At this point, we drew many framing details to transform the contemporary home into a Craftsman home that were approved by the Engineer and Architects. The Architect on this project was Tom Proctor and the Architect of record was Kalani Jensen. The Structural Engineer on this project was David C. Weiss. The General Contractor I worked with on this project was David Parrish who is one of the better high end builders in the greater Los Angeles area. The clients were quite wealthy and spared no expense in providing this home with the finest amenities. We worked with Architects and designers in drawing rough and finish elevation details so the transitions of the home would be presented without interruption. The Craftsman home was recently for sale and featured on the cover of Distinctive Homes in Malibu.
